A Story for My Descendants: The Point In Time of Poinsett Nowell Littlefield

"I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth -- almost literally.  Mother and Father were staying at the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado, California (which was a famous hotel then and still is as I write this in 1981).  Mother was beautiful and charming and was considered one of the most beautiful of the Washington D.C. debutantes, and Father was a handsome and dashing young naval officer at a time when that position held much more glamour than it does today. "

"The following article appeared in a local newspaper:"

BORN:  LITTLEFIELD --
At Coronado, California, March 29, 1908, to Lieutenant W.L. Littlefield, U.S. Navy, and Mrs. Littlefield, a son -- Poinsett Nowell Littlefield.

"Along with the evening consignment of guests March 29, 1908, at Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado, California, came Master Poinsett Nowell Littlefield, first son of Lieutenant W.L. Littlefield, U.S. Navy, and Mrs. Littlefield.  The statistical record of the birth was 6:25 p.m.  The new arrival was registered in red ink on the hotel guest book.  Master Littlefield is the second child born in Hotel Del Coronado, the other birth occurring 18 years ago, in the babyhood of the hotel itself.  Despite the fact that rear admirals, brigadier generals and famous captains of industry were on hand at the hotel, the youngster was by far the greatest personage at the hostelry.  In appreciation of Master Littlefield's importance and the good omen occasioned by his arrival, on the night of April 5 the guests of the hotel presented the youngster with a silver loving cup.  The baby for the first time was presented to the hotel family.  It was a very pretty occasion.  The babe was brought forth and introduced to the guests assembled in the red parlors.  Mr. Frank Baum, author of the Wizard of Oz, was pressed into service and delivered a humorous speech, finishing with a poem he had composed for the presentation of the cup.  At the actual tendering of the cup, as it was handed to Lieutenant Littlefield as the proper custodian, the hotel orchestra played the Star Spangled Banner.  Master Littlefield throughout the ceremony acted decorously and Lieutenant Littlefield as confused as a young father should.  The cup and its presentation was a surprise to the Littlefields.  The gift is a 12-inch, three handled loving cup, engraved on one side with the coat of arms of Hotel Del Coronado and on the other with this inscription:
